Diabetics in Mexico
15. Aug 2005 at 09:25

My wife and I are looking to move to the Costa Maya (Majahual) at some point in the very near future.  However, she will require the need for insulin.  How available is it?  I assume we would need to get it in Cancun or Chetumal...However, I am also considering costs...Is it possible to get health insurance in Mexico with a pre-existing condition?

Thanks...

No problem with getting insulin in Cancun and there are a few places in Chetumal that carry it also. As a matter of fact, it is less expensive here than in the US and the only brand is Lily.

I do not believe any insurance company anywhere in the world would rather give than receive. So, most likely, all will have pre-existing condition clauses and will thoroughly deny any claims that may be even remotely caused by diabetes; which will include just about everything. Been there done that. If I recall correctly, I believe one insurance person once told me, "Health insurance is for healthy people. They don't call it sick insurance for a reason." 8)
