On the seaside, a 150 sq. feet balcony shaded by a palm-thatched roof is attached to the house. In the morning, the sunrise over the Caribbean Sea can be enjoyed from this balcony. This is our favored place for hanging out and catching a fresh sea breeze during the hot noon hours. Stairs from the balcony access a terrace on the roof. This is an ideal place for private tanning during the day and for watching the amazingly bright stars during the night (hence the name of the house). All windows and doors are screened to keep bugs out. The beds are additionally set up with very fine mosquito nets (pavilions).
Our house is on a 50,000 sq. feet lot with about 200 feet private sand beach. The beach area has a grill site with tables, which is shaded by Uva de Mar (Beach Grape). This has become our favored spot for breakfast and for candlelight dinners. The Mesoamerican barrier coral reef in front of our beach is in swimming
distance (1000-2000 feet). The reef breaks the waves and this makes swimming
and snorkeling very enjoyable, even for a beginner. A rich variety of
colorful coral fish, lobsters, and large conches inhabit the corals in
the reef and the see weeds between beach and reef. We have two kayaks
and some snorkeling gear in the house, which can be used by guests with
no charge (we recommend however to bring your own high-quality snorkeling
gear). There are therefore many interesting animals to watch. Among birds there are Blackbirds, Hummingbirds, Woodpeckers, Flycatchers, Orioles, Chachalacas, Amazon parrots, Yucatan Jays, Pelicans, Frigatebirds, Herons and Ospreys. Recently a nesting pair of Collared Aracaris, a small Toucan species, has been occupying a Woodpecker hole in one of the Coconut palms. In addition, Iguanas and other large lizards have made their home around the house and many species of crabs including very large hermit crabs can be found everywhere. Sometimes Agutis (large guinea pig relatives) and Coatis (related to Raccoons) pay also a visit. |
