Costa Maya port to Reopen in July

Earlier this year, Cruise Critic reported that Costa Maya, which has been closed to ship traffic since last August as a result of Hurricane Dean, would reopen three months earlier than planned (initial reports forecasted a September comeback). That projection is still right on target -- Costa Maya's first and second berthing positions will be fully operational and ready to receive cruise passengers by July 2008. A third berth is expected to be completed by November 2008.

Costa Maya Reopening Three Months Ahead of Schedule

The Port of Costa Maya, which took a major hit from Hurricane Dean in August 2007, is on the rebound and coming back faster than anticipated.

The free veterinary clinic is scheduled in Mahahual on January 16-18 and in Xcalak on January 13-15 and January 16-18 in Mahahual. The clinic is sponsored by the humane society of Mexico.

The Malacon in Mahahual is under construction for some time now. It is progressing fast and changing the way the village of Mahahual looks. Although it is not a wide structure the beach is now seperated from the bars, shops and restaurants.

In Mahahual the construction of the Malecon has started. The Malecon is a 3 km long walkway along the beach. It starts at the lighthouse and goes southwards. It will contain light an other services like toilets. This an investment of 58 miljoen pesos.

Plain crash near Chetumal

While flying the aircraft in the Chetumal area, the pilot made three attempts to land at the Airport in Chetumal , however, the landing gears malfunctioned. The pilot then took the decision to land in the waters near his house, which he did. The pilot is unhurt.

Puerto Costa Maya to reopen in September 2008

Costa Maya's 'Puerto Costa Maya'announced today that it will not reopen until September 2008. The port was literally at ground zero when Hurricane Dean, as a Category Five storm, went ashore late last month. Also receiving major damage was the nearby fishing village of Majahual.

Dean hit the Costa Maya

Tuesday the 21st of August at 3:30 am Dean came ashore just north of Mahahual as a Hurricane catogory 5.

The area north of Mahahual was destroyed almost completely. Most trees have been taken down and the beach has been damaged. Even most concrete buildings have been taken down by the surge. Repairs, if possible, will take months.

Dean 2007 to hit the Mexican Caribean coast

The tropical storms Andrea, Barry and Chantal have not been a real threat. However Dean is undoubtedly going to hit the Yucatan peninsula. It's strenght now is a catagory 4 however it has a large potential to grow to a size 5!

The track as predicted now is right over te Cozumel and PDC again. As this prediction is only accurate within a couple of hundred kilometers right now the actual path can be over any place on the Mexican Caribean coast.
