Tropical storm Arthur hits Yucatan

Strong winds of the tropical storm Arthur hit the Chetumal Bay, Quinta Roo, Sunday June 1, 2008.

Tropical Storm Arthur weakened to a dissipating depression Sunday after soaking the Yucatan Peninsula. But heavy rains still threatened to cause dangerous flooding and mudslides in Mexico, Belize and Guatemala.

Costa Maya port to Reopen in July

Earlier this year, Cruise Critic reported that Costa Maya, which has been closed to ship traffic since last August as a result of Hurricane Dean, would reopen three months earlier than planned (initial reports forecasted a September comeback). That projection is still right on target -- Costa Maya's first and second berthing positions will be fully operational and ready to receive cruise passengers by July 2008. A third berth is expected to be completed by November 2008.

Belize and Mexico are renegotiating a border treaty of July 1893. It concerns an area on the two sides of the Rio Hondo. What will be effects of this is still unknown as details of this renegotiating have not been published.

Mexicans Extol Operation Miracle

Havana, Aug 3 (Prensa Latina) A group of 66 Mexican Maya indigenous returned from Venezuela where they underwent eye surgery as part of Operation Miracle, a humanitarian program in cooperation with Cuba.

Operation Miracle began in 2004 as a joint project of Presidents Hugo Chavez (Venezuela) and Fidel Castro (Cuba). So far it has benefited more than 250,000 people from Latin America and the Caribbean.

Uchben Kah opened by Félix González Canto

The ecoturistic park “Uchben Kah” (Old village) near Pedro Antionio de los Santos, Othón P. Blanco was opened by the state governor Félix González Canto. An investment of 2 million pesos made this project, which is the first of it's kind, in Quintana Roo possible.

The park contains a large part of the north side of the Bacalar Lagune. Initially this area was destined to be used for wood and chicle producution. However now you can enjoy the flora and fauna.

Hurricanes Dennis, Katrina, Rita, Stan and Wilma, all from the historic 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, were "retired" by an international hurricane committee of the World Meteorological Organization, which includes the NOAA National Hurricane Center, during their annual meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I-USA-Cell switches off analog phone network

I-USA-Cell has unexpectedly switched of their analog phone network. This means severall hotels on the Costa Maya are without phone. Alternatives are being tried out and it seems that hotels who have to change their system will also get a new phone number. Please check the message board for the latest information.
