Costa Maya port to Reopen in July

Earlier this year, Cruise Critic reported that Costa Maya, which has been closed to ship traffic since last August as a result of Hurricane Dean, would reopen three months earlier than planned (initial reports forecasted a September comeback). That projection is still right on target -- Costa Maya's first and second berthing positions will be fully operational and ready to receive cruise passengers by July 2008. A third berth is expected to be completed by November 2008.

So what's new? Well, a juicy tidbit we heard this year at Seatrade, the cruise industry's annual convention, has been confirmed: When it reopens this summer, the Western Caribbean port will be able to receive even the largest ships on order including Royal Caribbean's Genesis (220,000 tons) and NCL's F3 class (150,000 tons), though at this point, itineraries have not been released for any of these ships.

Also, new activities and amenities are being unveiled in conjunction with the port's grand reopening -- such as BioMaya Bacalar, a zip-line tour through the jungle amid parrots and monkeys. Also on tap: a brand-new boardwalk along the palm-lined beach of Majahual, the tiny fishing village also wiped out by Hurricane Dean.

According to a press release, Cunard, Princess, Celebrity, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Carnival, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, P&O, Disney, Windstar, MSC Cruises and Ocean Village have committed to returning to the port.
