Costa Maya Reopening Three Months Ahead of Schedule

The Port of Costa Maya, which took a major hit from Hurricane Dean in August 2007, is on the rebound and coming back faster than anticipated.

The Malacon in Mahahual is under construction for some time now. It is progressing fast and changing the way the village of Mahahual looks. Although it is not a wide structure the beach is now seperated from the bars, shops and restaurants.

In Mahahual the construction of the Malecon has started. The Malecon is a 3 km long walkway along the beach. It starts at the lighthouse and goes southwards. It will contain light an other services like toilets. This an investment of 58 miljoen pesos.

Puerto Costa Maya to reopen in September 2008

Costa Maya's 'Puerto Costa Maya'announced today that it will not reopen until September 2008. The port was literally at ground zero when Hurricane Dean, as a Category Five storm, went ashore late last month. Also receiving major damage was the nearby fishing village of Majahual.

Inhabitants of Mahahual (Majahual) have started a petition. There are concerns in Mahahual about the noisy ATV and speed boat excursions that are offered to cruise ship tourists. The owners of our hotels and restaurants have signed a petition to take to the appropriate government agencies and we would invite you to sign as well. Royal Caribbean's Grandeur of the Seas stuck in New Orleans

Royal Caribbean's Grandeur of the Seas, which was to visit the Costa Maya, got stuck in New Orleans. The Mississippi River remained closed for a several days due to the sinking of supply ship M/V Lee III. The Grandeur, which is based in New Orleans during the cooler months, had been scheduled visit to Cozumel, Mexico; Grand Cayman Island; and Costa Maya, Mexico. The vessel's 2,018 passengers have been told the cruise could not be started and were offered compenstation.

Grandeur of the Seas struck the pier in Costa Maya, Mexico, at approximately 1 p.m. (E.S.T.) Tax office opens in Nuevo Mahahual

A tax office has opened in Nuevo Mahahual (Majahual). Property tax can now be paid there in stead of in Chetumal.
