Dean hit the Costa Maya
Tuesday the 21st of August at 3:30 am Dean came ashore just north of Mahahual as a Hurricane catogory 5.
The area north of Mahahual was destroyed almost completely. Most trees have been taken down and the beach has been damaged. Even most concrete buildings have been taken down by the surge. Repairs, if possible, will take months.
Mahahual has suffered heavy damage but the concrete buildings have survived. Repairs will be ready in some weeks. Nuevo Mahahual has limited damage only.
The Xcalak area has suffered only small damage. Mainly palapa and wood roof structures have been damaged.
The cruise ship terminal has received heavy damage. It will take 4 to 8 months before it will receive any cruise ships.
The Mexican president has visited the area and has promised government help. Within one week after Dean destroyed part of the Costa Maya electricity has already been restored.
